Tea & Chat with Daisy & Max Designs
Hello! Great to have you here, the kettle’s just boiled – what would you like to drink?
Hi ! thank you for having me, ooh a milky decaff coffee please.
So, tell us a bit about yourself and your business.
So daisyandmaxdesigns is a small family run business, allowing me to work from home and fit my work around my daughter, husband and menagerie of pets! I design and make wedding stationery and colouring books for children. I've also written and sell a Bride to Be wedding planner, Bridesmaid and Mother of the Bride planner and a personalised Christmas story book for children too. I mainly work by myself but I do have help from my Mum, daughter and husband which is lovely as they all get involved.
What inspired you to start your creative business?
How did it all begin? I've always loved being creative and so when we got married I made gift bags and books for the children who came to our wedding. I couldnt find anything in the shops which was suitable so did it myself. I decided to develop a range to sell online as there was very limited wedding favours for children. A couple of years after our wedding I collated all my handwritten wedding plans and wrote the wedding journal based on my experience of getting married and again decided to sell this online.
How has your business changed and developed since it started?
I used to just design and make a small range of activity books for children for weddings but now its expanded into other occasions too, Christmas, Birthdays, Christenings, Traveling, First time on a plane.......The wedding journal now comes in lots of different style covers and has a choice of contents for the Bride to be and I design labels for gift bags too.
Where do you draw inspiration from for your designs and product range?
I don't really know! I just sometimes wake up with an idea or a theme and make the design around that. My daughter inspires me and helps me with the overall cover designs especially for the children's activity books, she makes sure I am on the ball with trends for children and popular themes and sometimes does the designing too! I love vintage text, butterflies, hearts and fairy-tale themes and have a handful of graphic designers which I love to use their cliparts in my designs as they are so unique and fit perfectly with my products. Some of my designs have been driven by customers asking me for a certain style or theme and I love doing that for people.
What are you working on at the moment? Anything new coming up in your on-line shop?
I've just designed some new Will you be my Matron of Honour, bridesmaid and flower girl invites using amazing graphics from one of my designers. I'm also in the middle of designing a new wedding journal and will be launching that very soon.
So, where does all this takes place? What’s your workspace like?
I work between two rooms, my computer is in my lounge and so all my designing and answering emails is done there and I have a room where I print my contents and make my books, bags and journals. I tried working out of one room but my family didn't see much of me especially in peak wedding season so whilst I am at my computer I am still with them if I am working in the evening!
What do you like most about running your own handmade business?
Working for myself is so flexible. I work the hours I like, I am around for my family and can take my dogs to the beach. I love the idea that my products are making others happy and that they are enjoyed world wide! and am thrilled to have sold so many journals helping Bride to be's plan their weddings.
What are your plans for your creative business for the future?
I love writing and following the success of my Personalised Children's story book I am planning to write more short stories and design more journals not just wedding related. I take each day as it comes really and will continue to design and make my products for as long as they are in demand.
